Abstraction

For the next project we looked at abstraction. We took a series of shoots of a paper model, each time we changed the lighting, colour or added mirrors to create an effect on the viewer. Then I decided to take my ideas further by focusing on colour. For my final shoot I took photos of oil and water, and added paints and coloured backgrounds to create vibrant and alluring colours. I liked the idea of using abstraction to create something that was complex yet oddly beautiful.

Francis Bruguiere: To begin this project, our entire photography class looked at Francis Brugiere's paper model series. His photographs of cut-paper designs create shadows which look effective as the black and white tones contrast well with each other. His photography uses strong, dramatic light, which is what we tried to focus on when we recreated these photos with our own paper models.

My own artist references: I picked four different artists to research for my own take on this project. First, I looked at Sharon Johnstone and Randal Holt. They both look at macro photography of oil and water droplets. I love how vibrant their images are, as they are alluring to the viewer because of how bright and close up they are. My two other artists were David Parfitt and Robin Broadbent. Their work is similar, however they look at soap bubbles, and the movement of the water within them.

For my own shoot I decided to create my own oil and water images. I added oil, water and coloured paints to a bowl and zoomed in on my camera, so that in the images you are able to see the texture and vibrance of the solution. I really like the outcome of my images, as they looked unique and fit well with the time of abstraction.
